Down-and-out American comedian Johnny Lazar tries to regain his status as an international superstar by embarking on a tour of working men's clubs and universities in England. Lazar is in fear for his life when another man is killed in mistaken identity for him. He befriends the chief suspect, Delroy Smith, and with Lazar's girlfriend Nula, they head up to Scotland for the next stage of his tour in a bid to lie low. However, while there, long-buried memories of a childhood trauma resurface, affecting Lazar's relationship with Nula, and making him a vulnerable target for the killers, who are closer than they think.

American comedian Johnny Lazar is given one final chance to break into the big time when he's employed to tour the various men's clubs and universities across the UK. But on his first gig, he happens to witness a gangland murder. Initially refusing to come forward, he relents when an E-fit of himself is released on TV. But his statement only stacks evidence against an innocent man, petty criminal Delroy Smith, while putting his own life in grave danger.
